Are you ready for AdBlue?
The next generation of EUROIV and EUROV Heavy Goods Vehicles to be introduced from October 2005 will have lower exhaust emissions and up to 5% better fuel economy.

To comply with the latest regulations and to ensure that noxious and particulate exhaust emissions are minimised, the exhaust catalyst must be constantly refreshed with a special AdBlue® solution stored in a separate stainless steel tank attached to the vehicle containing about 70 litres.

Trucks from Volvo, Mercedes Benz, DAF, Renault, Scania, Foden, Seddon & Iveco will all be fitted with AdBlue® systems.

What is BlueCat AdBlue?
AdBlue® is a highly pure non-toxic Urea and Distilled Water solution. It is manufactured in a highly controlled environment and strict quality standards are enforced to ensure that the catalyst is not contaminated in use. BlueCat AdBlue® is officially licenced by the VDA and fully complies with the official DIN70070 and CEFIC standards.

How does BlueCat AdBlue work?
AdBlue® is precisely metered directly into the engine’s exhaust manifold and works at high temperatures with the catalyst to neutralise noxious pollutants and soot particles using a ‘Selective Catalytic Reduction’ [SCR] reaction. The resulting exhaust gases contain harmless nitrogen, steam & carbon dioxide.

How much will BlueCat cost?
In operation, the reductions in fuel consumption are more than outweighed by the cost of AdBlue®. We estimate a net saving of at least £750 per vehicle per year for high mileage trucks at May 2005 fuel prices when using AdBlue®.

The manufacture of AdBlue® is energy intensive so the price per litre will vary with world gas prices and, like diesel, will alter according to season, order-size, delivery method and, of course packaging style.

How will AdBlue affect me?
All trucks & buses registered after October 2006 must be EuroIV or EuroV compliant and most will require AdBlue®. It will not normally be possible to retrofit AdBlue® equipment to existing vehicles so only new vehicles will be affected.

How much BlueCat AdBlue will I need?
On EuroIV vehicles, AdBlue® consumption will be about 5% of diesel use so a typical truck will use between 1500-2500 litres of AdBlue® per year depending on engine size and mileage. This is about 30-40 litres per week per truck.

A fleet with just 5 EUROIV vehicles will need about 1000 litres per month. As vehicles will typically be fitted with a 70 or 90 litre AdBlue® tank, most vehicles will need to be topped-up with AdBlue® every week-or-so.

What equipment will I need?
Most operators will dispense AdBlue® from a 1000 litre IBC container or from a 5000 litre storage tank in their yard, which is topped-up on a monthly basis. Some filling stations and workshops and dealerships will retail it.
When using IBCs, a stainless pump and bund will be required and an additional unit may be required so that when one IBC runs-out, a second is available straight-away.

What happens if I run out?
Orders to depots in 1000 litre IBCs can be taken up to 6pm daily and can be delivered before noon the following day from over 65 distribution points throughout the UK.
When driving, the vehicle’s tank contains up to two weeks supply of AdBlue® and, provided the tank is topped up at the depot weekly, drivers will not normally need to fill-up on the road.

A vehicle sensor will ensure that genuine AdBlue® is present in the special tank. If AdBlue® runs-dry, the On-Board Diagnostics will progressively reduce engine power to 50% to a limp-home mode over a 100 Km distance. Drivers may want to carry a small 10 litre plastic container of AdBlue® on the vehicle in case they run-out... enough for about 400 miles of driving.

What about safe storage?
AdBlue® should not normally be allowed to cool below -11 degrees celcius so an insulated tank is required in exposed locations. Bulk tanks should be positioned on a 300mm concrete base. An IBC installation will need a portable bund.

Best practice will determine that the tank is located away from water courses or boreholes.
